The work was part of the exhibition ‘JE T'AUTORISE A ÊTRE MOI, JE M'AUTORISE A ÊTRE TOI’ by ORLAN, presented from 18 May to 10 June 2024.

Rosa Parks (1913-2005), Afro-American activist, emblematic figure of the fight against racial segregation in the
United States. In 1955 she became famous for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on the bus, when black people could only occupy certain specific seats and spaces. This gesture of courage became the trigger for the anti-segregationist struggle in the USA.

ORLAN hybridizes with Rosa Parks and perpetuates her place by returning to the bus scene. We find on her dress and on the bus seat the “Selfshybridation Africaines” of ORLAN and at the bottom of Rosa Parks' wallet, her prison number, 7053.
