The work was part of the exhibition ‘JE T'AUTORISE A ÊTRE MOI, JE M'AUTORISE A ÊTRE TOI’ by ORLAN, presented from 18 May to 10 June 2024.

Emancipated French painter and sculptor, Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) was one of the great painters of the 19th century. Empress Eugénie crowned her “Knight of the Legion of Honor”, showing that “genius has no sex”.

In this edition, ORLAN hybridizes with Rosa Bonheur based on a self-portrait where the painter represents herself in a field with cows. In order to accentuate the bucolic and laughable aspect, ORLAN uses the hairstyle from the series “Femme qui rit”, from 1998, as well as a red flower that he holds in his hand. On the other hand, she holds a palette and brushes as a reference to Rosa Bonheur's main artistic practice and wears a costume created by Franck Sorbier. She completes the image with sparkles on the horns and adds protrusions to the animal, equally shiny.
