Critical notes
The expression “Narrative Figure” appears for the first time in the context of the exhibition "Everyday Mythologies" presented in 1964 at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris (the second version would take place in 1977) and ended up identifying not a school or a movement, but a group of artists They are formally close to Pop Art, very politicized and witnessing the contradictions and dramas of consumer society. The connection to the event and to the reality would be highlighted in the exhibition “Critical Figurations” (1964-1975) which took place in 1992 in Lyon and would remain one of the strengths of contemporary art. Erró, Klasen, Monory, Rancillac and Seguí would remain faithful to what was the initial spirit of “Narrative Figuration” whilst renewing its contents and diversifying its expressions. Yvan Messac's creation, which can be understood in this context, presents the icon of feminine sensuality at the center of a universe marked by the exuberance of shapes and the intensity of colors.
