FASCION AND PRESENCE OF RAW ART
The “Manicómio” project, a creation space for artists outsiders who have experienced or are experiencing mental illness, was born in 2018 at Beato on the initiative of Sandro Resende and José Azevedo. You are already This is the origin of several exhibitions by renowned Portuguese and foreign artists, such as Emir Kusturica, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Jeff Koons and Jorge Molder. The present editions that result from a partnership between “Manicómio” and the CPS affirm the prestige and vitality among us of Art Brut, an emblematic trend of modernity in the plastic arts, inaugurated in the 40s by the French artist Jean Dubuffet.
The connection between Art Brut and art Surrealist inspiration, a certain naivety to which the Cobra movement (1948) also gave protagonism, to popular and urban narratives, is present. clearly evident in the four universes we present today, by Bráulio, Joana Ramalho, Cláudia SampaioandJosé of the Castles. Intimate universes close to the marvelous, in a vision that is both enchanted and disenchanted at the same time of reality, between mysticism, poetry and solitude.
