Hervé Di Rosa

Recognized French painter, he was born in Sète in 1959. He was a student at the National School of Decorative Arts and at the age of twenty he was already a student. He exhibited his work in Paris, Amsterdam and New York. In 1981, at the age of 22, he co-founded the Free Figuration movement. É He is also a co-founder of the Modest Art movement, having been challenged in 2000 by the French Minister of Culture to open the International Museum of Modest Arts in his homeland. Since 1978, he has sought local, artisanal artistic knowledge, undertaking many trips: he spent four years in Vietnam learning how to work lacquer, and many others in Cameroon learning how to work pearls, wood and bronze. Tunia, Bulgaria, Ghana, Mexico, Israel, among others, are some of the countries where he has been learning from artisans. In 2016, and carrying out its 19th; “Journey to the World of Arts”, he was at Viúva Lamego working with the factory’s artisans and deepening his knowledge of ceramics, particularly tiles. In this way, the artist diversifies his artistic approaches, adding new techniques to his own. It crosses painting, sculpture, installation, language linked to art. comics and pop culture elements to graffiti and African art. Modest Art involves the revaluation of artistic knowledge that most people are unaware of, bringing it to Contemporary Art.

In 2016, an important retrospective exhibition opened in the French capital, at La Maison Rouge and, in 2023, the exhibition "Archipelago Hervé Di Rosa - Works of the MIAM – Musée International des Arts Modestes" at MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, in Lisbon.
