Born in Lisbon in 1960. Sofia began her training in England with the Textile Design and Foundation Course at Hertsfordshire College of Art and Design in the United Kingdom and, in Lisbon, she attended the Engraving and Painting studios at Ar.Co. Multidisciplinary artist has been developing work in areas as diverse as painting, drawing, illustration, graphic design, ceramics, tapestry and scenography. Many exhibitions are part of her curriculum, among which we highlight “SIM”, the individual and anthological exhibition of the last ten years of her work held at the Cordoaria Nacional, in Lisbon, in 2011. In 2013, she held the exhibition "Inmóvil en la luz, pero danzante" in Mexico City with the support of the Embassy of Portugal and Michelle Aizpuru, and with the sponsorship of several Portuguese entities. A personality of recognized cultural merit, she was photographed by Carmela Garcia, alongside other illustrious female artists, for “*13 Políptico”, an exhibition held in 2012, whose objective was the photographic reinterpretation of the famous and enigmatic Panels of São Vicente de Fora. In the same year she was awarded the Femina Visual Arts Award. Sofia Areal is represented in important public and private collections, in institutions such as Banco Espírito Santo, the Modern Art Center of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Carmona e Costa Foundation, the PLMJ Foundation and the Funchal and Elvas Contemporary Art Museums.
