BENTO OLIVEIRA
A POETICAL CELEBRATION OF NATURE
Bento Oliveira, painter, sculptor and engraver, was born on the Island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde archipelago. With the first drawings of his youth, he began his artistic journey. He graduated in Fine Arts in the Amazon (Brazil), having returned to Cape Verde in 2002, where he has been teaching, being an advisor for Visual Arts at the Ministry of Culture.
In his work the human, telleric and cosmic dimensions merge, always associated with the geographical territory to which he belongs and involving a strong spiritual aspect that assumes: “cultivation What can be called transcendence? beyond appearance, which is energy, is communication, it is feel it.”
The current woodcuts, in a refined and calligraphic way, with a strong presence of black people, connoting drama and sensuality, poetically and symbolically celebrate the earthly, vegetal and animal world of their origins.
