THE IMAGINARY ATLANTIS
Ana Maria who was born in Lisbon in 1959, graduated in Philosophy in Porto and has exhibited individually since 1993. Among other distinctions, she received the Prize National Painting Júlio Resende in 1990, two honorable mentions at the Vila Nova de Cerveira Biennial in 1991 and 2003 and the Amadeu de Souza Cardoso Prize in 2005. In the words of the renowned painter Rogério Ribeiro the his painting “can propose paths of error. You can invent geographies of the world (…). Ana Maria has the greatest meaning of this walk in a sublime landscape – almost aerial, almost ethereal – as if it were an immense lacework.” In all of his paintings and drawings, we also see, according to RR, “this kind of floating continents that do not seek any port as a home.” These continents of a detailed language, of a magical fragmentation in a musically driven game between a hidden order and an apparent disorder in a subtle and fascinating chromaticism define the space of poetry and painting in a very personal combination ;which translates into, in the case of the current edition of a digital print, a kind of Atlantis of the imagination, a source of intense seduction and perplexity. A territory for the wandering of our gaze between the maps of fantasy and memory, with its small creatures that give shape to unknown emotions and feelings. A true score to teach us to read in the visible, the music of the invisible.
