Markus Lüpertz

Born in Liberec, Bohemia (now Czech Republic) in 1941. Lives in Düsseldorf and Berlin. Painter, sculptor, and printmaker. In the 1960s developed a style of monumental painting based on frenzied gestures melding figuration with abstraction. In the early 1970s incorporated imagery from the German military and World War II, including helmets, chariot wheels, trench coats, and crosses. Since the 1980s has continued to make paintings in the boldly gestural, Neo-Expressionist manner. Has also made sculptures in painted bronze and in clay. Became an active printmaker in the 1980s. Has completed more than 450 prints, many printed in his own studio, others with masters printers including Peter Kneubühler, Zurich. Usually eschews woodcut but has worked extensively in other mediums, sometimes in unusual combinations, such as etching with lithography or drypoint with linoleum cut. Has made many prints and illustrated books. Has also produced numerous screenprinted posters. Has published with Fred Jahn, Edition der Galerie Heiner Friedrich, and Sabine Knust – Maimilian Verlag, Munich, among others in Europe and United States.
