Jorg Immendorff

Born in Bleckede an der Elbe, Germany, in 1945. Lives in Düsseldorf. Painter, sculptor, printmaker, and teacher who, after learning stage design, studied under Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the 1960s.

During this time created cartoonlike narrative paintings with text and political underpinnings. Frequently used babies as motif, later adopting the childlike word LIDL for his program of cultural protest, including performances, political demonstrations, classes, and related works. (...) An active printmaker working predominantly in linoleum cut, followed painting series with series of prints on the same subject in the early 1980s. Has experienced with color variants, also creating unique prints with hand additions. Utilizing an aggressive, jagged style and monumental scale, became associated with the German-Expressionists, and helped revive the mediums of woodcut an linoleum cut. Has created some 350 prints published mainly with Sabine Knust – Maimilian Verlag, Munich, and several artists’ books.

He died in Germany in May 28th of 2007.
