Born in Lisbon in 1953, the city where he lives and works.
He began his studies in civil engineering, transferring in 1976 to the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He later attended the Artistic Training Course at the National Society of Fine Arts. While a student at the Faculty of Fine Arts, he worked as a professional photographer, dedicating himself more intensely to photography. painting from 1985 onwards. Between 1986 and 1998 he was a professor at Ar.Co. in Lisbon, having been responsible for the drawing and painting departments. He began participating in exhibitions in the 1970s, having held his first solo exhibition in 1982.
In the national context, Pedro Calapez is is one of the most recognized names, having emerged in the so-called decade of the «return to the world’ painting», the 80s, together with artists Pedro Cabrita Reis, José Pedro Croft, Rui Sanches, Rosa Carvalho and Ana Léon.
His work has been the subject of exhibitions in several galleries and museums both in Portugal and abroad, with particular emphasis on solo exhibitions: "Campo de Sombras", Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, Mallorca (1997); "Madre Agua", Museo MEIAC, Badajoz and Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo, Seville (2002); "Chosen Works", CAM- Fundação C. Gulbenkian, Lisbon (2004); "zero floor", CGAC- Centro Galego de Arte Contemporaneo, Santiago de Compostela. Also noteworthy is his participation in the Venice (1986) and S. Paulo (1987 and 1991) Biennials, as well as in the exhibitions "10 Contemporaneos", Museu de Serralves, Porto (1992) ; "After Tomorrow", Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon (1994); "Tage Der Dunkelheit Und Des Lichts", Kunstmuseum Bonn (1999); "EDP.ARTE", Serralves Museum, Porto (2001); "Beaufort Inside-Outside", Contemporary Art Triennial, PMMK Museum, Ostend (2006); “The collection”, Serralves Museum, Porto (2009); “It’s not the fault. mine, works from the António Cachola” Collection, Berardo Museum, Lisbon (2010).
