Noronha da Costa, one of the biggest names in current Portuguese art
Noronha da Costa, painter, filmmaker and architect, was born in 1942 in Lisbon and is a Portuguese artist. He is recognized by critics as one of the biggest names in current Portuguese art. The artist, who in 2017 celebrated 50 years of his career, has been developing an aesthetic centered on the problematic of the image that has already emerged. This is present in his first works, collages in which he explored double and ambiguous images. An incursion into the poetics of objects that construct an indefinite and surrealizing space would be continued in his painting, which José Augusto França defines it as a “neo-romantic situation that goes to the ghostly sources of surrealism (…) and constitutes an “unrealization of real” of deep modern consciousness”. According to art critic Maria João Fernandes, the modernity of Noronha da Costa is at an all-time high. precisely in its ability to interrogate appearances, viewing the visible as the starting point of an intellectual, sensitive and dreamlike experience. In current screen printing, the overlapping of planes combines different images of a nature that are more than just representation, but rather the dazzling suggestion of mystery and fascination who preside over it.
