Francisco Vidal

Unmissable name in contemporary painting and one of the most emblematic artists of his generation. Francisco Vidal was born in Lisbon, in 1978. Portuguese, Angolan and Cape Verdean and lives between Luanda, Angola and Lisbon, Portugal. Graduated in Plastic Arts from the Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha, he took an advanced course in Visual Arts at the Escola de Artes Visuais Maumaus, in Lisbon. He lived for some time in the United States, obtaining a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts at Columbia University, in New York.

He began exhibiting regularly in 2005. In 2014 he presented the painting project “Utopia Luanda Machine” at 56.ª Venice Biennale, at the Angola Pavilion, curated by António Ole, and at Expo Milano, curated by Suzana Sousa. In 2016 he presented in Luanda and, in 2017, in São Tomé and Principe, the “ESCOLA DE PAPEL” project.

Francisco Vidal’s practice highlights ideas around work and international mobility. É It is recognized for its large painting installations, drawing powerful calligraphic lines on screen printing canvases, in vivid colors and varied chromatic schemes. He has works in national collections, such as those of the EDP Foundation, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Cachola Foundation, and international ones.
