From the collaboration between the CPS and the MONSTRA Festival, a special collection dedicated to Portuguese animated cinema was born, curated by the festival’s director, Fernando Galrito.
Launched with the screen print Ice Merchants by João Gonzalez, the CPS Collection of Portuguese Animation now welcomes two new screen prints signed by renowned directors: "Nayola" by José Miguel Ribeiro and "Percebes" by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves.
Award-winning animation director José Miguel Ribeiro signs the screen print inspired by his film Nayola. Set against the backdrop of Angola and centered on the female bonds between generations, the film features a screenplay by José Eduardo Agualusa, Virgílio Almeida, and Mia Couto—names that reinforce the literary and symbolic strength of the work. The author’s personal iconography, memories, and fantasies are clearly visible in the film, which is available with the acquisition of the work.

Nayola takes place in two distinct time periods, against the backdrop of the civil war, and tells a story centered on motherhood. It reflects on the bonds of love between three women — Lelena (the grandmother), Nayola (the daughter), and Yara (the granddaughter) — and how these bonds generate survival and hope.
Also included in the collection is the screen print Percebes, by directors Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves, sharing its title with the acclaimed animated film they co-directed, which is also available with the purchase of the screen print. It is an animated documentary, created in watercolor and digital techniques, depicting the life cycle of this crustacean within the traditional harvesting context in the Algarve.

The film explores the relationship between local inhabitants, the sea, and tourism; in the screen print, the dual rhythm of complementary colors — blue and orange — along with the shapes themselves, creates a kaleidoscopic movement that draws and captivates the viewer’s gaze.
Three works with distinct approaches and extraordinary visual and documentary value, highlighting the importance and national and international recognition of Portuguese animated cinema.
It is worth noting that the first partnership with the Monstra Festival dates back to 2022, expressed through the album “Monstra – freeze frame”, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its founding: 20 years, 20 images, 20 directors, 20 countries.
