Africa Lunar and Solar is an exhibition that brings together two masters of Portuguese art, Cruzeiro Seixas and José de Guimarães, in an artistic dialogue that explores their deep connection with the African continent. The exhibition highlights the duality of their approaches: the intimate and dreamlike dimension of Cruzeiro Seixas, associated with the lunar night, and the vibrant and ritualistic celebration of José de Guimarães, illuminated by the African sun.
The exhibition reveals two distinct perspectives of the African influence on the work of both:
Cruzeiro Seixas, a central figure of Portuguese surrealism, through a lunar Africa, marked by mystery, dreams and the unconscious. During the period he lived in Angola, he was deeply influenced by the geography and local narratives, which shaped his visual and poetic work.
José de Guimarães, an internationally renowned artist, portrays a sunny Africa, full of rhythm and vitality, with a visual language rich in color and symbolism. Fascinated by tribal art and African rituals, the artist built a vocabulary that incorporates masks, ritual elements and geometric or organic shapes.
This duality between night and day, imagination and celebration, complements each other in a visual journey that celebrates the timeless strength of African art and legacy.
“África Lunar e Solar” also marks the beginning of a partnership between the Portuguese Serigraphy Center and Livraria Bruaá, which represents the CPS in the Central region of the country.
