50 years ago, Portugal gained Freedom and freedom of expression.
Artists were granted a new creative breath and autonomy in their work.
And, in this commemorative year, CPS invited three artists: Juan Carnero, Miguel Januário, and António, and launched four works as part of a Special Edition.
“Oferenda”, Linocut, 25 copies
"Sempre”, Linocut, 25 copies
Juan Sebastián Carnero created two works that reflect his connection with Portugal and his relationship with CPS. As an observer and listener of the historical narrative, Carnero leaves us his impression of April 25th.
The images directly refer to the “Carnation Revolution,” including the iconic flower in his works.
“Abril Mágoas Mil”, Woodcut, 50 copies
Miguel Januário, creator of the intervention project ‘±MAISMENOS±’, created this work to commemorate the 50th anniversary: 50 red carnations were pressed into 50 prints, giving each copy a distinct expression.
Besides its philosophical significance and great aesthetic beauty, this technical experiment also represented the versatility of CPS's achievements and its means.
“25 Abril Hoje”, Silkscreen, 50 copies
From CPS’s association with the exhibition “António: 50 years of Humors”, held in Vila Franca de Xira, came an exclusive silkscreen also coinciding with the 50th anniversary of April 25th.
This celebrates the remarkable career of António, with half a century of contributions to cartooning, honoring his exceptional talent and dedication, intelligence, and biting critique.
The Carnation Revolution brought profound changes to people’s lives. Beyond the commemorations, parties, and evocations, there is also a call for learning, reflection, and action for change.
Art helps to reinforce memory and artists, as agents of change, emphasize the importance of affirming democracy today.
