Gracinda Candeias was born in Luanda in 1947, the daughter of a father who was also a painter, José Marques Candeias. At the age of 18, he left for Porto with the aim of taking the General Painting Course at the School of Fine Arts, having been taught by Painter Júlio Resende, among others. Between 1972 and 1973, he took Painting and Textiles courses at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Lisbon. In 1973 she was an Assistant at the National Society of Fine Arts and in 1984 she was subsidized by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. Between 1986 and 1988, she lived in Paris, as a scholarship holder from the same foundation, having been tutored by Júlio Pomar and Eduardo Luís. An essential figure in the Portuguese cultural panorama. Artist with multiple interests: painting, performance, scenography, fashion, radio, he also dedicates himself to research projects on topics as different as African rock art or new imaging technologies. É She is the author of several tile panels in public spaces, the best known of which is the Martim Moniz Metro, in Lisbon. Throughout his career he participated in more than 500 exhibitions, namely in cities such as Paris, Lisbon, Brussels, Madrid, Macau, Luanda, Brasilia and Beijing. In her career she has received several distinctions, including the Painter of the Year Award, Lisbon (1982) and the “Mac/99” Career Award, Lisbon (1999). His work is represented in several Museums and private collections, in Portugal and abroad.
