Querubim Lapa

Born in Portimão in 1925. He graduated in Sculpture and Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon. He taught at the Machado de Castro Industrial School and the António Arroio School of Decorative Arts.

In 1964 he joined the SNBA Technical Council. He has been awarded several prizes and has had a series of regular exhibitions since 1942 until the end of the year. to present. Painter, sculptor and ceramist, Querubim appears associated with Portuguese neorealism, a movement that emerged in the 1930s, with a markedly anti-fascist ideology that sought a bridge between the political and cultural struggle that was going on in Portugal, during the Estado Novo.

In his own words: “The neorealist movement came out of António Arroio. We were going to visit the halls of the SNI [National Secretariat of Information, a propaganda organization for the Estado Novo] in Alcântara, where they exhibited the modernists of the generation of António Ferro [director of the SNI], a modernism that for us is already relevant. it was a bit decadent. Neorealism was both a political and an artistic reaction, because we were all a bit left-wing.

Author of important public works such as the panel in the Rectory of the University of Lisbon, the exterior and interior cladding of Casa da Sorte, also in Lisbon, two panels at Pastelaria Mexicana, the cladding of the station of the Bela Vista metro and the panel As Meninas e os Meninos at the school named after him, in Campolide.

His latest works move towards the purification and simplification of shapes and colors.

He passed away in Lisbon, on May 2, 2016.
