An architect trained at the ESBAP, he dedicated himself to painting for over 50 years, having also explored the field of graphic work, serigraphy, engraving and lithography. He also made photography a means of expression and even experimented with cinema.
In the 1940s, he formed the group “Os Surrealistas” together with Mário Cesariny, Pedro Oom, Henrique Risques Pereira, António Maria Lisboa, Mário Henrique Leiria, Fernando José Francisco, Fernando Alves dos Santos and Cruzeiro Seixas.
The year 1966 marks the beginning of a new phase: "metaphysical pop", which characterizes all of his later work.
Awarded by the C.A.M. -Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in 1983, he held numerous exhibitions in Portugal and in important international cities such as Tokyo, Paris, São Paulo, Chicago, Rome, Montreal, Frankfurt and Madrid.
