Rahma Lhoussig
Born in 1996, Rahma Lhoussig is a visual artist from Taroudant, Morocco, graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts of Tetouan.
The artist took part in residencies at the Jardin Rouge (Montresso Foundation) in Marrakech (2019-2020) CDA gallery –Casablanca (2021). She exhibited her work during artfairs such as : AKAA fair- Paris 2023, ARCOLISBOA-Lisbon (Portugal 2023), 1-54 Marrakech 2023, Investec Capetown 2022, Taiwan annual artfair 2021, 1-54 Insider (Marrakech2019), Also, she exhibited at the National museum of Lisbon (Portugal,2023), Tafeta gallery – (London, 2022) American arts center (Casablanca, 2022), CDA gallery (Casablanca, 2022), Mahal Artspace (Tangier, 2021), Mohammed 6 Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rabat, Kent Gallery (Tangier, 2021), Kulte gallery and edition (Rabat, 2020), Venise cadre Gallery (Casablanca, 2018).
Rahma's artwork is characterized by a captivating blend of animals, everyday objects, and nature. Her compositions emanate a familiar atmosphere, where dissonant elements coexist harmoniously. Animals, flowers, insects, and tools intertwine, creating a mesmerizing tapestry of imagery.
Meditating upon the relationship between body, memory and meaning, the artist uses oil paints, acrylics, pastels & coloured pencils to create colourful scenes that translate the human psyche into a sensorial experience. Rahma’s work identifies emotions as anchor points and catalysts for our daily lives; the body, often linked to forces in the form of everyday objects, then acts to represent unconscious internal conflicts.
The intentionally unfinished pieces reflect the fragmented nature of memory, with figures presented in states of rest, immersion or hidden behind masks. Inhabiting a space different to the world around them, yet part of it, the figures experience moments of submission, fatigue, fragility, and reckoning with the animals and domestic objects in their orbit. The artist’s paintings and drawings depict an iconography of the unfinished – eclectic elements shift the work into the mystical realm of dreams.
Rahma Lhoussig says: ‘Our dreams allow us to discover unnoticed, hidden parts of ourselves. My work looks at the unconscious like an allegory, uncovering pieces of stories formed from memory, thought, and emotion. I’m fascinated by the relationship between the conscious and unconscious states, how our habits, routines and attitudes are all influenced by our emotions, and the ways we attribute meaning to our surroundings through our senses. This dialogue helps me to uncover more of the cryptic inner nature of us as humans. Through this work I'm building a parallel dimension where different representations intertwine, to invent a new way of appropriating this unknown mysterious universe.’
