Critical notes
REAL AND DREAM LANDSCAPES The work of João Hogan (1914-1988), one of the greatest painters of the second half of the 20th century in Portugal, evolved from 1942, the year of his first exhibition ;o, under the sign of landscaping with a long naturalist tradition at national level, but which in its case is modernized by integrating the constructivist vision of Cézanne and the expressionist vigor of the Belgian painter Constant Permeke (1986- 1952) with which it shares the “muffled” and powerful forms. In his graphic work, the connection to the fantastic and the surreal is accentuated, examples of which are the works we present today, real and dreamlike landscapes, to which the stone or the mountain give the symbolic sense of a dialogue with the sacred.
