Álvaro Lapa (1939-2006), an admittedly self-taught artist, began his training in Philosophy and held his first solo exhibition in 1964, in Lisbon.

Creator of a very original and particular system of plastic signs between abstraction and European and North American expressionism and surrealism, he is the creator of a very original and particular system of plastic signs. Considered one of the biggest names of the second half of the Portuguese 20th century.

Art critic (A.I.C.A.) Maria João Fernandes wrote about Álvaro Lapa's painting: “A language of non-preconceived signs that seem to emerge directly from the sources of the unconscious, without apparent affiliation with the sources of the real, characterizes its informalism, encompassing a figuration playing freely with abstract backgrounds and codes, and establishes the link with a surrealist lineage to art. to which we can add many other data that mark the personality of the artist and his work, a caustic and tormented humor, a way of thinking and writing through images and painting with words, a visual philosophy, a plastic poetics that proposes us a cautious and complicit exploration”.
