Reys Santos

Born in Lisbon in 1921. He studied at the António Arroio School and attended the Escola Superior de Belas Artes.

He held group exhibitions at GAP, Salões de Arte Moderna do SNI, S.N.B.A, Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, Grupo dos Amigos de Lisboa and Academia de Marinha. He also held several solo exhibitions. He received medals from the S.N.B.A., in drawing, oil painting, pastel and miniature. Received an Honorable Mention, 2nd; and 1º Awards given by the Navy Academy. Received a special prize at the “Imagem da Flor” at the Lisbon City Council. Received the 2nd and 1ª Medals from the Group of Friends of Lisbon, and the Malhoa Scholarship granted by the S.N.B.A.. He was a Fellow at the Institute of Haute Couture in Brussels, Amsterdam and New York, as well as at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Rome.

His works are represented in national and foreign private collections, and also at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Navy Museum and the Nagasaki Museum. He worked in Graphic Arts and is currently working in Graphic Arts. already retired from Instituto José de Figueiredo, where he held the position of Head of Painting Division.

In 1972, he carried out the restoration of the Triptych “Temptations of Saint Anthony”, by Jerónimo Bosch, as well as guiding and carrying out the restoration of the paintings damaged by the floods in the Palace ;cio de Oeiras, belonging to the; FCG, in addition to numerous responsible interventions, both in modern and avant-garde painting, particularly in CAM and also in ancient painting. In 1991, he restored Eduardo Viana's paintings to appear at the Europalia Exhibition, in Brussels. Supervised internships for Portuguese and foreign restorers.

Elected National Academic Correspondent, of the National Academy of Fine Arts, in 1989. In 2001 he received the Silver Medal commemorating the 1st; Centenary of the S.N.B.A. and presence at the “100 Years 100 Artists” Participated in the exhibition of works by Malhoa Scholarship winners at the Caldas da Rainha Museum and at S.N.B.A. in Lisbon. He was elected honorary member of the S.N.B.A. In 2002, for the second time awarded 1st; Prize at the Exhibition “The Sea and Maritime Motifs” at the Navy Academy. In 2004, it is named Effective Academic by the National Academy of Fine Arts. In 2006, he was awarded the “Acquisition / Painting 2006” by the National Academy of Fine Arts.

He passed away in May 2012.
